Subject areas

The work of this group relates to the areas on either side of the Atlantic – Western European countries and North and South American countries – and studies them from both a historical and a current-day perspective.

Its subject area includes 3 broad fields.

1/ Territories and societies

This area explores 3 major issues in the relationship between man and space:

  • Social planning and territories
  • Town and country
  • The coast: usage areas and spatial experiences

2/ Contacts, exchanges, comparative approaches

This area concerns everything relating to exchanges, be they large or small scale, and includes three issues:

  • The call of the sea: from exchanges to cultural relations
  • European Atlantic worlds, Celtic peripheries
  • From one world to another: the Americas, comparative approaches

3/ Identity representations and constructs

This area explores the cultural diversity and similarities of different spaces, and includes two major issues:

  • Multilingualism, identity, culture
  • Cultural markers and heritage constructs
