Human and Social Science research into Information and Communication Technology (ITC) studies these technologies from the perspective of the user and the content provider, as well as analysing the role they play in the economy, in public life and in the world of politics.
This group works on five research areas:
- Usages concentrates on the way ICT is used and appropriated. This includes research into socio-educational technologies, the ergonomics of ICT, predictive analysis of future usage and its impact on daily life, and the emergence and impact of new media services. Within the Human and Social Sciences, the emergence of ICT leads to the need to guage usage and study how to measure their impact and use.
- Cognition concentrates mainly on the way individuals handle information, and methods for conceiving and presenting information in such a way as to facilitate processing. This area also analyses new forms of social life and interactions arising from new communications technologies.
- Innovation concentrates on the way technologies lead to new artistic practices and how users and communities use new communication practices and technologies in ways not originally intended. This area also includes research into intellectual property rights and how to protect them.
- Territory and networks concentrates mainly on the study of geographic representation systems and on how new spatial and temporal forms arise, leading to the development of new tools. The aim is to assess impact of ICT on network structures and on regional and spatial planning and development.
- Strategy seeks to study how ICT transforms information systems and organisations’ strategies. This area also studies how ICT impacts on markets and economic activity.
