Les dix dernières années ont vu une transformation radicale de la politique et des flux migratoires dans la région nord-américaine. La rhétorique et le sentiment anti-immigrants se sont intensifiés, en particulier sous les récentes administrations des présidents Donald Trump aux États-Unis et Andrés Manuel López Obrador au Mexique. Cette conférence permettra d’aborder les relations politiques et économiques entre les États-Unis et le Mexique dans un contexte où les questions des migrations internationales et des inégalités sociales entre les deux pays sont omniprésentes. Quelles sont les forces démographiques et sociales à l'origine des changements observés aujourd’hui dans la relation entre ces deux pays ? Pourquoi le populisme anti-immigrants gagne-t-il en force dans la région ? Est-il possible de maintenir une économie et une population prospères sans migrants ?

René Zenteno est professeur au Département de Démographie de l’Université du Texas de San Antonio (UTSA). Il est l’auteur de nombreux articles et chapitres de livres sur les thèmes de la migration mexicaine aux États-Unis, des marchés de l’emploi, des inégalités sociales, de la mobilité professionnelle et de la participation des femmes au marché du travail. Il a été Vice-recteur des Relations Internationales de l’Université du Texas de San Antonio, Secrétaire d’État Population, Migration et Affaires religieuses, au ministère de l’intérieur du gouvernement mexicain, Secrétaire Général Académique du Collège supérieur de la Frontière Nord (COLEF), et Directeur exécutif du Centre d’Études Mexique-Etats Unis de l’Université de Californie à San Diego. Parmi les distinctions qu’il a reçues, figurent la Présidence de la Société Mexicaine de Démographie (SOMEDE) et le titre de membre de l’Académie Mexicaine des Sciences.
The challenges of the migration policy in North America
During the past decade, a radical transformation in migration policies and flows in the North American area occurred. Anti-immigrant rhetoric and feelings have intensified, especially under the recent administrations of Presidents Donald Trump in the United States and Andrés Manuel López Obrador in Mexico. This conference will address the political and economic relations between the United States and Mexico, in a context where the issues of international migration and social inequality between the two countries are omnipresent. What are the demographic and social forces behind the changes seen today in the relationship between these two countries? Why is anti-immigrant populism gaining strength in the area? Is it possible to maintain a prosperous economy and population without migrants?
Speaker: Pr. René Zenteno
René Zenteno is currently professor of Demography in the College of Public Policy at the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA). He is the author of numerous articles and book chapters on the themes of Mexican migration to the United States, labor markets, social inequalities, job mobility and the participation of women in the labor market. He was Vice-Provost for International Initiatives at the University of Texas at San Antonio, Under Secretary for Population, Migration and Religious Affairs in the Ministry of the Interior of the Mexican government, provost of El Colegio de la Frontera Norte, and executive director of the Center for U.S.-Mexican Studies at the University of California, San Diego. Among the honors he has received are the Presidency of the Mexican Society of Demography (SOMEDE) and membership in the National Academy of Science of Mexico.
